Marvel's WAR OF THE REALMS Looks Bigger Than The Movies

https://ift.tt/2zwHB6q

Marvel's movie universe may have been wiped out with a snap of Thanos' fingers, but doing the same in the comics means an all-out battle that has been building for years. And at long last, Marvel's WAR OF THE REALMS is finally here.

As if there were any doubt that the world of Marvel Comics can get bigger, bolder, crazier, and more incredible than the movies and TV shows, Jason Aaron's massive event is enlisting just about every superhero into an Asgardian army. Captain America on a winged horse. Thor with twin hammers. Loki with the Infinity Gauntlet. And through it all, fires spread by Earth's enemies tearing their way across The World Tree. It's a war unlike any before... and it's here before fans know it.

Those who have been keeping tabs on Jason Aaron's runs on both Thor and The Avengers know that he's been planting seeds for some time, as Malekith the Dark Elf (the villain briefly seen in Thor: The Dark World) moved piece by piece into place for his massive war. Readers got a taste of what lunacy such a war would bring when The Queen of Cinders recently attacked Thor and his brother, Balder in the realm of the dead, briefly making Thor the new King of Hel in the process. But now that the first artwork for April 2019's WAR OF THE REALMS has been unveiled, expectations will need to be raised.

Not only will Thor reap the benefits of a war waged across all Nine Realms, clutching an enchanted hammer in each fist, but it seems he will be bringing his fellow Avengers into the fold, as well. Captain America wins the early match-up thanks to his Pegasus, but we can only assume that Iron Man, Iron Fist, Blade, Punisher, Ghost Rider, Jane Foster recovering from her cancer, and even more will be getting epic moments of their own. At least, that's our hope, after hearing from Marvel how long Jason Aaron has been setting up this enormous explosion of warfare:

I have been building towards WAR OF THE REALMS for the entire duration of my THOR run. So we're talking six years and 80-something issues and counting. This is a war that covers the entire globe and involves the biggest heroes of the Marvel Universe, as you can see in this amazing promo piece by my MIGHTY THOR collaborators, Russell Dauterman and Matthew Wilson, who I'm so thrilled to be working with again on WAR OF THE REALMS.

The event begins in April of 2019, and while it's not the only major event that has rocked the Marvel Universe of late (the betrayal-filled Infinity Wars still has to kill a Guardian of the Galaxy before its over), but Aaron's acclaimed work at the head of Marvel's Thor books elevates this event with them. Hopefully, his years spent plotting the event - and the many heroes and beings in Marvel's future recalling how massive the "war of the realms" turned out be - will show when the first issue arrives.

But hey, even if WAR OF THE REALMS turns out to be as controversial or underwhelming as most comic book events, there's no way Marvel can take back Captain America, Pegasus Rider. Right? Right.

WAR OF THE REALMS will begin in April 2019, exclusively from Marvel Comics.
