Post-Gym Makeup Picks + What Happened When I Worked Out With Makeup On!

So I've actually been hitting the gym for two months now and for the first time in my life, I've been a consistent gym rat. Five days a week, following a personalised programme, pouncing on the chance to attend every class available - you can call me dedicated. Being a daily make-up wearer, of course there was going to be a gym makeup bag. In this case, a whimsical Betsey Johnson number. If you're like me and have to resort to Transport for London to make your way back home from the gym, then stick around and take notes.

I have a brief for every product that wants to go in my gym makeup bag. It has got to have some sort of a multi-functional aspect to it. It has to master the 'no-makeup' makeup look seamlessly, and the most important bit, it has to be light and dinky. With all that sweaty, heavy gear I'm carrying back, I really don't want bulky makeup items to add to the weight. Let's dive straight into it.

The complexion picker-uppers. Regardless of whether you were working out bare faced or with a hint of  base on, you'll need something to brighten up the under eyes and touch-up where you usually conceal. For me it's a few blemishes here and there and pigmentation around the mouth that I want to even out. Cream concealers are potent and compact so keep them handy. An affordable and foolproof under eye concealer will ensure you look awake. You really don't want to use your usual, mid to high-end concealers, especially if you're only heading home. Claudia Louch Concealer Trio and Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in Warm Medium 3 cut it for me.

Brow game: ON. I wouldn't say I am a perfectionist when it comes to brows. You'll usually find me in need of some tweezing and trimming. Having said that, I haven't faced the world without 'doing' my brows for a good six years now. At the comfort of my dresser, I rely on an Anastasia Brow Kit and mix and match a brown and a grey, taking my time to feather in those strokes with an angled brush. At a cosy changing room, with steam covering half of the mirror, it's a much hurried task. Maybelline's Brow Satin Smoothing Duo-Brow Pencil & Filling Powder in Dark Brown has been my go-to pick.

Perfect that pout. Having a post-gym makeup bag does not mean one exits the sweat-fest with a red, glossy mouth. I prefer to aim for something more appropriate to the environment. I know I've raved about this before but there's nothing comparable to The Body Shop's Lip & Cheek Velvet Stick. A demi-matte shade of the most natural looking pink, with translucent pigmentation and an even finish. Perfection.

Cheeks on fleek. I've seen some people at the gym leaning more towards a bronzer, to add some shadows and dimension to the face and to warm up the complexion a little. Thankfully, having a golden, olive skin tone means that I can skip out the bronzing part, at least, post-gym. Personally, I like to add back some colour to my face as all that blood pumping still fails to lend a flush to my cheeks. To keep things natural and fresh, I opt for Art Deco's Arctic Blush, which has this beautiful milky pink flush or sometimes the Art Deco Arctic Lipstick in Cool Orchid which makes a gorgeous dewy cream blush.

It sounds like a lot in writing but it literally takes me five minutes to go from pale to polished post-workout.

And coming to the oh-so-controversial, "Can I workout with makeup on?" debate. I'd say the answer is, each to it's own. Of course skincare guru Caroline Hirons and your Dermatologist would disapprove. The main reason being that foundation and concealers can clog pores while you're sweating and prevent you, well your skin, from experiencing the full benefit of a healthy exercise regime. I personally have worked out wearing makeup quite a few times and my skin is exactly as it was before. Now to be clear, even if I wear foundation, it's MAC Face & Body, which as we all know is water based. It's extremely light weight and thin and has never resulted in blocked pores or a breakout for me. With an added bronzer and a lip tint, I personally don't think I'm doing any damage to my skin.

Also, I'm glad to know I'm not alone. Elle's article on Best makeup to wear to work out features fitness celebrities, trainers and instructors, including my favourite Cassey Ho, on their favourite gym beauty products. If you're one of those people who hit the gym with naturally flawless skin, flushed cheeks and full brows - I envy you, you skin snob.
